BE 2012: Rolling full backups question

Hi there,

I'm having some trouble with the setup of a backup job within BE 2012; what I'd like to happen is for full backups to run on a daily basis to 4 "daily" tapes (M,Tu,W,Th); these backup sets would be retained for a month and Friday I have a set of 5 tapes that I would cycle every week. Essentially, these are two different media sets.

The problem I'm having is that the backup sets don't seem to be overwriting the older "expired" data; I seem to be confusing the overwrite protection period, append period, and expiration period. Even when the backup sets aren't configured for expiration, if the overwrite protection period for the tape is passed, it seems that all of my backup sets are overwritten.

What does the overwrite/append protection period need to be set to for this to function properly? How do I ensure that tapes are "recycled" without losing my non-expired backup sets?

Thank you in advance!!!

When a tape is overwritren everything on the tape is erased, hence the actual date of when it can be overwritten keeps moving backwards depending on the last time a data write occured. In other words you have to add your overwrite pritection period to the time of the end of the last job that uses the tape to work out when the tape can be overwriiten.

Unlike a disk (parallel access devcie) tapes are serial access devices so you cannot only erase/overwrite one backup set on a tape it has to be all of them. Which is where append timings come in, as an append is an operation to add data to unused space on the end of a tape. The timings for append period do not move from the point that the specific tape is overwritten as all they do is lock down how long the append option is available from the first overwrite.

Assuming you only write data to each tape daily tape on one night then to re-use it them the same day the next week, the overwrite protection will need setting to 6 days (Not 7) Likewise the weekly ones would need to be protected for 27 days (to allow for February)

If you write multiple servers to the tape, it will need an append period so I would suggest maybe 12hours (assuming your job finishes overnight) might be enough.

Extra info: If you do backup multiple servers I would recommend going to BE 2014 as multi-server jobs are re-introduced which does make tape configuration and handling slightly easier

Colin,

Thank you for your help on this. If I am understanding correctly, we would then need to hold onto the tape (for example, Monday) once the tape was full for 30 days before using it again to ensure that the last backup set was preserved, correct? In order for the tape to be used again, we would need to overwrite it entirely, if I am understanding what you've said...?

Are you muddling up the term "full backup" with a full tape?

I am not sure where you 30days came from in this statement, however with regards your re-use statement, the choices are:

- Completely destroy eveything on the tape no matter how many backup sets are on the that tape (an overwrite)

OR

- Add new backup sets to the spare space on the end of the tape until the tape is full (an append)

What you cannot do is erase a set from the start of a tape (without erasing all the sets) just so that you have enough space for the next backup (this is not a Backup Exec limitation, all software that uses tape works the same way in this aspect )
