Hi,

Following were the infra details:-

1. VMware ESXi (2 no.)

2. VCenter.

3. VMotion is enabled.

4. four no. of VM for SAP and database is DB2 which is running on RHEL6.5

5. one VM for Zimbra.

We have made the solution using BE 2012 for taking backup of all the VMs along with the GRT.

Now, please , help with the following queries:-

a. For VM backup 2 no. of VMware host licesne will work?

b. A windows agent license for VCenter.

c. For GRT which agent is required for DB2 database's file restoration?

d. For the VM where Zimbra is situated, which agent is required for GRT restoration.

Any other requirement for technical point of view.

Thanks.

a. Yes b. Yes c. DB2 and SAP are not supported. You can backup the whole VM and when you restore the entire VM, you should get it back at a stage when it was backed up. You would have to check with SAP whether doing so will give you a consistent application after the restore d. If Zimbra uses a supported database, then you need one Agent for Applications and Databases

Application GRT using VMware agent is offered only for MS Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint & Active Directory.

Additionally, one requires an agent for Vmware & hyper-v license is required per ESX host and Agent for Applications & DB licenses are required if GRT is taken for the above listed applications.

Hi,

Can we do a file/folder restoration as GRT restore from the RHEL system (VM).

Thanks.

If using VMware agent to backup, then GRT capability is available only for Windows systems. However, if you use the RALUS agent to backup the RHEL machine, you can restore individual files/folders.

Note that RHEL 6.5 is not supported. BE 2012 only support up till RHEL 6.2. See the SCL below http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH175581

Note that supported or not supported doesn't make any difference in this case.

Why not? He wants to do GRT restore of his files so he would need to backup the VM as if it is a physical machine

Hi,

Yes right ...

BE 2012 support only upto RHEL 6.2...

so my porpose is not met...

As BE 2012 does not support GRT for Linux system and also if I use the RALUS to backup the RHEL system (as if a physical system) will not take a backup either (due to compability issue).

Any alternative way out....

Thanks.

Unfortunately, no. Not at the moment. However, the new BE 2014 which is due to be released soon may support your version of RHEL

Hi,

I have checked the beta release for BE 2014 and it states in the "What's new in this release?" section that RHEL 6.4 is supported but no statement for RHEL 6.5.

Check this below link (with BE 2014 beta release section , which required to registry for this BE 2014 beta program).

Thanks.

You can only confirm the support after BE 2014 is released.

Indeed. But it doesn't matter whether it is supported. What matters is whether it works. RHEL 6.5 is just RHEL 6.2 with all current updates. If RALUS works on 6.2 it will work on 6.5.

In this case, we might as well throw away the SCL.

As far as Linux is concerned that would be no loss.

Hi,

Ok..ok...surprise

I have an idea lets go for a R&D with which we are discussing ..

I will create a LAB setup with RHEL 6.5 on VMware 5.0 and will try using BE 2012 with RALUS installed (or trying to)

And let see..the result..laugh

Thanks
