BE 2012 really slow on some files

Just installed BE 2012 Rev 1798 64-bit on a new server running Windows 2008 R2 w/ RAID 1+0 setup.  Using backup to disk with USB cable attached to docking station and Seagate Barracude LP 2000 GB drives.  Just backing up local server - so no network activity. No A-V installed.  Was using shadow copy and avg rate was 1,256 MB/min. Turned off shadow copy and avg rate was 1,213 MB/min.  ~625 GB total backup size.  Most files go blindingly quick, but other files will literally takes minutes to back up -- and they can be like just a little over a meg in size.  And the problem seems to be consistent with these certain files.  Any ideas on why only some files would be taking so long to back up even though they're not that large?
