BE Upgrade with new Media Server

Hi,

I've carried out a number of successfull in-place upgrades of Backup Exec, but I need some advice on the following scenario please:-

My customer wants to upgrade from BE v9 to v10.d - but not an in-place upgrade. They've purchased a new server that will become the BE 10.d Media Server with a new tape librarfy attached to it.

Am I able to install v10d onto the new server, plug in the current serial numbers for the various agents and options and them import the catalog/job history databases from the v9 server, prior to decommissioning the v9 server? Is this the way to do the upgrade?

George.

Hi,

In order to answer your Question we need to know the following points :

-what are the operating systems running on both the servers ?
-have you performed the upgrade on the old BE server ?

Update us on the same and revert for any further Query
Hope this will help you

Thank you
Gauri

Hi,

The operating system of the current v9.1 server is Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4. The Operating system on the to-be-new BE server is Windows 2003-AS-SP1.

I have not performed the upgrade on the old BE server. I don't want to touch the old BE server if I don't have to. My question is - is there a way to install v10d onto the new server and import the catalog, job history, backup selection lists, job history onto the new v10d server that are currently sitting on the v9.1 server?

George.

The way I'd do it is to upgrade the existing server to v10d, then follow http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/268315.htm to dump the configuration to a disk file

Install 10d on the new server

copy the \Data and \Catalogs folders to the new server ( Backup exec services stopped on both servers) and run BEUTIL to recover from the disk file

Run the v10D TapeInst http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/281696.htm , let BackupExec remove devices it cannot see and verify the ones that do exist on the new server can be seen.

then just for good measure, I'd force BackupExec to re-index the catalog file see http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/272886.htm

Thanks very much Ken, I'll try it in our lab environment and let you know how it goes.

Hi,

Ken, your suggestion involves upgrading the existing server from v9.1 to v10d. I don't want to touch the v9.1 server if I don't have to. Is there a method of transfering the catalogs, job histories, selection lists, job schedules etc from the v9.1 server to the new v10d server?

What if I install v9.1 on the new server first, transfer the stuff over, then upgrade it to v10d?

Hello,

You can try install v9.1 on the new server first, transfer the stuff over, then upgrade it to v10d.
