BE caanot find any media in the tape device

James_Wheatley
Level 3
Hi,
I have recently installed BE 10d (Trial) for testing, it can see the tape device fine but cannot see any tapes I insert into it.
I have installed the BE drivers for the tape device (COMPAQ SDLT320) and disabled Removable Storage in the services but still no joy.

Thanks,
James

Did you check if the "barcode rule option" is enabled ?
If not try enabling it by following this technote:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/<259444>

If you still cant see any tapes, try running a 'Clean on the drive', and then re-run Device Configuration Wizard.

If you still cant see the tapes, then try using OEM drivers instead of Veritas drivers for the tape device (COMPAQ SDLT320).

I have tried the above and nothing has worked. It can see the device fine but just cannot get it to read the tapes.

Might try another drive we have here and see if we have any luck with that one.

Hi,

Please install the following latest drivers:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/282974

Have you tried running inventory?

Also ensure that the firmware is latest.

I have the latest firmware and drivers for the Tape Drive. I have tried to run an inventory but it never seems to read the tape and just sits there until I cancel it.

Hi,

What sort of device are you using?

Is it a autoloader or a standalone drive..?

To isolate the issue, just try inventorying a Backup to Disk folder instead of a tape drive and check whether that works.

Have you tried installing OEM drivers ?

We are using the COMPAQ SDLT320 (Standalone) I have tried a backup to disk and that works fine, have also tried all the drivers I can find for that device (BE and COMPAQ)

Hello,

In case you are using BE 10d, first verify if the device is listed as Compatible in the 10d HCL:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/281670

If yes, again ensure that the Symantec device drivers are properly installed and working. Check if you get any device related errors in the Windows event logs. Delete the device from backup exec, restart the services, reboot the server and then check the results.

Also check if the device is detected and works well with Windows NT backup. If it isn't detected in Windows device manager, backup exec too will not detect it.

Note : If we do not receive your reply within two business days, this post would be marked assumed answered and would be moved to answered questions pool.

Regards.

Forgive a silly question, but after inserting the tape, do you run an inventory before trying to do anything else?

David_Jennings
Level 5
Can you "Label" the media? If I remember correctly you need to register, for lack of a better word, the media w/ BE before you can inventory it.

Forgive a silly question, but -

Are you running an inventory after inserting the tape and before trying to execute any other tape operations?Message was edited by:

Please ignore the double post. My first one did not appear when viewing the thread, but magically did after reposting

I have tried running an inventory but it never completes, even left it over the weekend but nothing ever happens. In the end had to cancel the job after 40hrsMessage was edited by:

I do not get the option to label the media only eject and inventory, neither of them work.

Check the event viewer and see if you have any errors related to the device.

Sure sounds like a driver problem.

From Windows Device Manager, is the drive started and ready? (no overlay icons?)

if you shut down all BackupExec services, does NTBackup see and access the drive properly?

Are you current on firmware and drivers for both the controller and the tape device?

Nothing in the Event Viewer regarding this drive and I can use the device with NTBackup and ArcServe.

Hi,

Please check from BE > Tools > Option > Settings > Media Management > Media type > select the correct media type..

Start SGMON and run the Inventory and then try running job once again .

Please paste here the "error" from sgmon.log

Hi James,

Thank you for the Update.

Have you also checked the correct media type as suggested ..

Have you Powercycled the Server once and check the status ?

Also try installing OEM drivers if not tried earliar .

Update us on the same and revert for any further Query
Hope this will help you

Thank you

Hi,

I checked the media type and it was wrong so I set to DLT but still the same problem.
Tried installing OEM drivers and restarted the server but no change, same thing happens as the BE drivers.

Thanks
