BE2010R3 supported USB disks

Ken_Bryner

I'm trying to switch us from tape to USB drives and keep running into the situation where the job goes to Queued but never actually runs.  I can inventory successfully. I spent quite a bit of time with Symantec support who eventually decided the problem is that my drives (Seagate) are not on the supported list.  But then I read KB items where others are using WD drives, which are also not on the supported list.  So, my question is just how critical is the brand/model of USB drive to be successful?  Anyone using Seagate drives?

It may be hit or miss whether an unsupported device will work. It looks like you are running into some of that now. If you would like to see if your hardware can be included email the request to Backup_Exec_HCL@symantec.com

Email sent.  Thank you.

If the disk is not listed in the HCL, you can test its functionality with the B2DTest utility below

B2Dtest.exe

If it passes all the test, then you should be able to use it.

I presume that you are using multiple USB disks.  If so, one possible cause of your problem is that you have disks with the same diskid.  Check the diskids and change them if necessary using the procedure in my blog below

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/changing-diskid

Also, if you are rotating your USB disks, make sure that you are using at least BE 2010 R2 and see my article below on how to configure them

PKH - thank you for your reply. I will try the B2Dtest shortly. As far as disks having the same disk ID I don't think that's it since my problem started with the very first disk, so there wouldn't have been anything else to be a duplicate. I have also previously seen both your blog and the article on rotating disks and used those as a roadmap for how I configured - I thought they were quite helpful but my results haven't been.

BE tracks disks by their diskids so when you decipher your B2D folders you would have already used them and confused BE

Below are the results of the B2DTEST run. I see one Warning message but it looks like everything else Passed. I would have no problem with starting the entire process over if you think that would be helpful, but if I do I want to make sure that I'm doing everything needed to reset everything. There are two methods for creating backup to disk folder in BE2010 and previous versions back to v10d:

Backup to Disk

Removable Backup to Disk

The top method is for disks that are not defined as removable by the Operating System. This would include an external hard drive that I assume is the Seagate drive you are using. The bottom method is for disks that are defined as removable by the Operating System. This would include the RDX drive offered by many vendors or the Quantum GoVault if you are familiar with that one.

The BE app does not expect the Backup to Disk device to ever be disconnected but if it is, it will offline the drive. However BE expects a Removable Backup to Disk device may be here one moment, gone the next, and then back again. It was coded to handle this much like media in a tape drive.

Unfortunately BE2010 allows you to create a Removable Backup to Disk folder on a non-removable drives such as a USB attached HDD...but it is not recommended.

I do not see a problem with using the Seagate drive as a Backup to Disk folder in BE. If you do not configure it as a Removable Backup to Disk folder in BE then you should no problem with backups and restores...aside from unforeseem hardware issues and the like.

This is not fatal.  When the disk is connect again, it is easy to make it online.  From BE 2010 R2 onwards, this is action is automatic for USB and eSata disks.  BE will be notified by the OS when the disk in plugged in.
