BE2014 - tape library showing empty slot after media expires

We're running BE2014 SP1 on Server 2008 R2, Dell tape library, using Microsoft "Unknown Medium Changer" driver and Symantec IBM ULTRIUM-TD3 driver.

Upgraded from BE2012 a few weeks ago, we did not have the issue under 2012.

We run a full backup of multiple servers to a robotic library partition with 4 slots on weekends.  Each weekend one of the tapes is deleted & retired before the backup goes to use it, and the slot shows "empty" until an Inventory is run.  After the inventory, the backup can use the tape.

The Audit Log shows the DLM action -

10/11/2014 6:11:54 AM       BESSER\services                Device and Media          Media : A00104 has been moved from media set Scratch Media to media set Retired Media.
10/11/2014 6:11:54 AM       BESSER\services                Device and Media          Media : A00104 has been deleted.
10/11/2014 6:11:54 AM       Data Lifecycle Management      Backup Set Retention      Deleted expired media: A00104,17691D7B-C7C3-4F1E-8BEA-C344CD4A11D5,,0

The media set overwrite protection is set to 1 week.

Any way around this issue?

Thanks!

When you retire and delete a tape cartridge that is in the library, you will need to do a scan job or an inventory job to get it back into the BE database.

Why do you want to delete media weekly?

We aren't deleting or retiring it.

DLM has done it at the same time 2 weekends in a row now.

No one that has access to Backup Exec is doing it manually.

I don't know if this is related to overwrite protection, which is set to 1 week.

Each weekend the tapes in the 4 slots are older than 4 weeks.

Would recommend to log a formal support case and reference - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH225365

We have a similar issue (posted this also here: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/tapes-randomly-disappear-slots-backup-exec-2014#comment-10598701)

BE 2014 SP1 on Windows Server 2012 R2 (also happened before SP1, but not with older BE versions). Dell TL4000 (aka IBM 3573) LTO library.

We insert 24 (already expired) tapes on Wednesday. Then, on Friday, backup begins. On Sunday, jobs start asking for tapes, and Backup Exec sees (for example, the actual count is varying):

  • 14 used tapes
  • 5 "Backup Exec and Windows NT media" tapes
  • 5 empty slots

We then need scan the empty slots and scratch all of the unused tapes, and then the jobs continue to run.

To me this is clearly a bug. The tapes are already expired (and displayed in blue) when we insert them, so DLM should not touch them after this (until they are re-used of course).
