Backing up 2 Node SQL cluster with the remote agent

James_Matthews_

Hi I am having problems installing backup exec remote agent on my 2 node SQL cluster.

I have a backup exec 10d media server that I use to do all my backups. I have installed the backup exec remote agent onto both nodes of my windows 2003 sql cluster but I am unable to select any resources on the clustered nodes either via the local machine or the virtual servers.

When I go to the selection screen all the resources are greyed out and I can not select anything. What can I do to resolve this.

Hello,

-- Is the installation of the remote agent sucessful?

-- Kindly refer the following Document:

How to enable support for "Restrict Anonymous" when using Backup Exec 8.6, 9.x, and 10.x for Windows Servers

http://support.veritas.com/docs/238618

Thank You,

Shweta

The Backup remote agent installation said that it was successful and the service is running on both nodes of the cluster. I have try changing this registry key but this has solved the problem.

I have looked at the properites of the server we are trying to backup from the backup screen and it says

Backup Exec Information
Installed: No
Status: Not Available
Version: Not Available

Remote Agent
Installed: Yes
Status: Running
Version: Not Available.

Is this a MSCS cluster rather than a Veritas Cluster? I have a similar problem on a Veritas Cluster.
If you have another SQL server (non-clustered) are you able to select that?

James_Matthews_
Level 4
The servers that I am trying to backup are SQL servers and they are part of an Microsoft Cluster. The backup exec server is a stand alone server and it is sucessfully backing up many servers including SQL servers and it has the remote and sql agents installed as well as many others.

Sounds like you have the same issue as me then! BE works OK, SQL works OK, the cluster works OK, BE can backup non-clustered SQL databases, but clustered databases don't appear in selection lists.
The response I got from (paid for) Veritas support was that SQL in a VCS cluster wasn't supported (even though it's explicitly mentioned in the Administrator's Guide), though SQL in an MSCS cluster is supported.

James_Matthews_
Level 4
It is not just the SQL databases that I can not select. I also can't select any of the disks or file shares on the cluster. I could live with not getting th SQL agent working if I can do SQL backups to Disk that I then backup to tape with backup exec.

That's slightly different to me. I can select the clustered disks through the virtual server name.
What I've had to do is set an SQL task to backup to a file each night, then back that up as part of the backup set, which is hardly an ideal way to do it.

As an experiment, could you try the following?
On one of the SQL cluster nodes, stop the Backup Exec Remote Agent service.
Run vxmon, and enable debug logging.
Start the BE Remote Agent service.
In BE, click the backup icon, then try to open the virtual server.
Stop the Remote Agent service on the cluster node.
Have a look in the BE RANT\logs folder and check the log.

I'd be intrigued to know if you get any lines with errors referring to IsClustered or SQL2FindDrives.

James_Matthews_
Level 4
I have followed your instructions and this is the log file that I get.

Their are no mentions of IsClustered or SQL2FindDrives but there is a line
08/16/06 14:04:44 SqlInstance='$DPM$'

We do not have an SQL instance with this name. Is this a normal line to see.

Also there are a few dll's that have failed to load. Is it this that is causing the problem. bedspush.dll bedsvx.dll bedsorcl.dll bedsagnt.dll

Any more ideas?

The DPM bit is (I'm fairly sure) to do with the agent for Microsoft Data Protection Manager.
Did you try and open the selection list for the server? The stuff I get is the same as you get to start with:

Basically I'm just intrigued to see if the errors we are getting are the same, to give us any further clues. At the startup stage, it all seems similar.

I did try to browse to the server but it simply doesn't connect to the server so it doesn't add anything to the logs.

I have installed the remote agent onto a couple of non clustered test servers and I am getting the same errors. Is there a maximum number of remote agents that you can have for one media server?

When I look at the remote server properties i get the following information?

Backup Exec Information
Installed: No
Status: Not Available
Version: Not Available

Remote Agent
Installed: Yes
Status: Running
Version: Not Available.

Interesting that it can't detect the Remote Agent version... Mine is detected OK (10.1.5629.20)
I don't think there's a limit on the number of remote agents you can have.

Hello,

Uninstall the remote agent, reboot the server and then install the remote agent using the following technote and then reboot the server

Alternative local installation method for the Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) and the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO)

I have followed your instructions and reinstalled the remote agent but this has not solved the problem.

I will try to connect to this server from a media server on another site and see if this works.

Any other ideas would be great.

I have just installed a new backup exec server and with this new server I can see all the agents and servers correctly so the problem must be with our existing media server.

Any ideas as to what we can do to resolve the problem. I don't want to have to rebuild this server as it currently has about 25 backup jobs using three tape libraries and it would take ages to rebuild it.

Do you have any suggestions to solve this problem. I need to get my backups sorted ASAP so we can go live with our new servers

I don't know what to suggest. Your issue seems different to mine on closer inspection. However, we have the same net results - SQL backups aren't working! :(

Hi,

Since you have mentioned that you cant see the shared drives as well, I would like to know what is the status of the individual nodes?

Are the local drives of the individual nodes displayed correctly..?

Please refer to

Microsoft SQL databases are greyed out and cannot be selected in the backup selection list even though Backup Exec Agent for SQL is installed.

I can't see the local drives on either node or on the virtual servers from my main media server.

From the test media server I can see everything but unfortunately I do not have any tape devices attached to my test server but I have done successfuly backup to disk backups.
