Backup Completed with Exceptions

tstay

I installed BackupExec 11d (11.0 Rev 6235) on a Windows Small Business Server 2003 to perform daily backup. I discovered that all the backup performed lately completed with exceptions. The exceptions are mainly the program is unable to open item from the Trend Micro folder (the Antivirus software we installed), C:\WINDOWS\system32\wins\winstmp.mdb, F:\CPS\Journals\Inbound\.keeper, and F:\CPS\Journals\Outbound\.keeper. Is this not normal? And is the backup considered successful? Will I be able to restore my server with this backup? Is there anyway to prevent these exceptions?

The details of the exceptions are as follows,

If you are not using AOFO then yes this is normal. The files are in use, therefore Backup Exec can not access them.
It is still a successful backup.
To avoid the errors you can use AOFO, or exclude the directories from your backup.

Let me know if that doesn't answer your questions.

Thank you for the reply.

I looked under the Use Advanced Open File Option, there are 4 options for me to choose (Auto, Symantec, Veritas,Windows). Which should I choose? What is the difference?

The default is Auto, this is what I would recommend.
The difference is what writer the snapshot will use.

Shadow Copy Components will always use VSS, Microsoft's writer.  This can not be changed.

I tried AOFO last night on 2 backup jobs. Both I selected the Automatic option. 1 completed with exceptions, the other failed. Generally, the error messages that I've got are as follows,

I think both backups failed. What should I do?

You will need to install the AOFO option on the remote servers.
This will load the filter driver that allows the backup to run with AOFO.

Hope this helps.

How do you install the AOFO option on the remote servers? I only installed the agent. By the way, it's not a server, it's actually a PC running on XP Professional that we are trying to backup.

I have also discovered that after selecting AOFO, say if I backup my server on 26 April 2007 evening, the data that is recorded on the the tape is up to 25 April 2007. Why is it so?
