Backup ESXi5 Linux hosts

Hi!

If I have a ESXi5 server with SLES11 servers and some OES2 with NSS volumes.

Can I then use this software:

Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 Server Suite
Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 Virtual Server  Agent
Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 Deduplication

and make file restore from the host OS (Linux ext3 and  Novell NSS volumes), not only the hole server :)

(The idea is to install a windows 2008 R2 server and run the Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 Server

on that server

then Install Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 Virtual Server  Agent

on the ESXi5 server.)

Ans Yes you can install BE2010 r3 on win 2008r2 and then install your licenses like virtual agent ,dedup agent and etc as licenses for all agents need to be installed on media server. Now there is no virtual agent which needs to be installed on ESXI5 you just need to add name of esx or vcenter in backup selection which will list all virtual machines under it which you can backup Please check few link which gives information on virtual agent http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO21769 Thanks

There is no GRT restore for Linux VM's, so you would need to back them up as if they are physical machines.  That is, install RALUS in them and back them up as physical machines.  With your AVVI licence, you are entitled to install RALUS in your Linux VM's without further licences.

Something else to consider...

If you decide to use the Linux agent (RALUS), please note that NSS volumes on x64 SLES/OES is currently not supported. Please refer to the SCL for more details:
