Backup Error failed through VCenter but success through ESXi

Hi all,

Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP4  is installed on Windows 2008 R2.

There are totally 4 nodes of ESXi, namely E1, E2, E3 and E4

E1 / E2 - ESXi 4.1 u2

E3 / E4 - ESXi 4.1 u3

vCenter - version 4.1 @ WinXP

Problem encountered:

- we cannot backup VM @ E3 / E4 while we can backup VM @ E1 / E2 through VC

Error Messages:

V-79-57344-38277 - Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine.

VixDiskLib_Open() reported the error: You do not have access rights to this file

- for additional information we can backup VM @ E3 / E4 via ESXi

Can anyone suggest what action we should take to solve the problem we cannot backup VM@ E3 / E4 through VC ?

Regards,

Thomas

Hello Thomas,

Please follow the steps mentioned in the following article: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129572

ESX 4.1 Update 3 is not supported.  BE 2010 R3 only support up to ESX 4.1 Update 2.  See the SCL below

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH137682&key=15047

If you want support for ESX 4.1 Update 3, then you need to upgrade to at least BE 2012 SP3. See the SCL below

Just wonder why I can backup directly through ESXi 4.1 u3 (not supported in SCL) but not vCenter 4.1 (supported in SCL)? Should we match both vCenter and ESXi's version to backup successfully?

When something is not supported, it may or may not work as expected

In that case you should update the vCenter

Your error says: VixDiskLib_Open() reported the error: You do not have access rights to this file

Are you creating a SAN or NBD transport method backup ?
