Backup Exec 12.5 w/ MS Virtual Servers Agent

Hi,

We are currently implementing two Hyper-V Hosts on Windows Server 2008 R2 hosting ADC, Exchange and SQL 2008 VMs.

Can we backup the Active Directory, Exchange and SQL data by using the MS Virtual Servers Agent with GRT enabled, or do we have to set up separate a job and use the Windows Server Agent in order to successfully backup the above, so that in the event of a restore, we can drill down into AD Objects and Exchange mailboxes for example?

Thanks in advance,

Stuart.

I'd have separate jobs for SQL and Exchange. The reason for this is that you cannot/shouldn't use AOFO with DB backups.
However, it will be possible to backup what you want WITHOUT AOFO. THat would definitely work.

It is recommended as a best practice, that you backup the virtual guest, and then have a 2nd job with an agent to backup just AD, or Exchange, or SQL.

The virtual guest backup via hyper-v or vmware for that matter, will not truncate the logs for exchange or sql.

A new cool feature of BE2010 is GRT aware backups in Vmware, not sure about Hyper-V though...  Backup the VMDK, and it can recover files, folders, AD objects, Exch info, and Sharepoint docs, all from that single VMDK backup!  Wicked cool.
