Hi all,
I have configured Backup to Amazon S3 using the cloud connector. I did a test backup of 48GB (a VM). The upload of data was free but i have been charged for transfer out. Isn't the backup just uploading data, why is there a download of 48GB (see attachment)
What is backup exec doing to class it as a transfer out of S3?
Also when backing up the is no way to set the storage class to Standard IA or Glacier, it seem to all go into Standard, this is crazy!
Cloudberry backup can do this and its a fraction of the price.

Any help or information would be appreciated.

Hi rio_10
Based on your post I assume that you have verify turned on for the backup job to Amazon S3? If yes - Amazon counts that as a "data transfer out from Amazon S3" and you will be billed according to their pricing matrix: https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/.
Whether to use verify or not for a cloub backup depends on how important is the data for you. If you run Disk-to-disk-to-cloud backups you can decide to run verify for the disk-to-disk part and leave it off for the disk-to-cloud part.
Another option would be use the AWS Storage Gateway / VTL in which case the verify job would be run against a local copy (if available) before the transfer to VTL (powered by Amazon S3) or VTS (powered by Amazon Glacier). More information about the AWS Storage Gateway / VTL can be found here.
The Amazon S3 FAQ has some examples on how the S3 pricing is calculated (https://aws.amazon.com/s3/faqs/) or you can try out their calculator for more details per service and per AWS region (http://aws.amazon.com/calculator/).
Best,
