Backup Exec 15 stuck on Discovering Resources after Windows Updates applied

Had issues recently with a BackupExec 15 server with robotic library stuck on "Discovering Resources" in the storage section after the recent Windows Updates were installed. As a result, no backup jobs could run. No new hotfixes, LiveUpdate shows BE 15 is up to date. Tried all the fixes suggested regarding remote agents possibly being a cause.

Only resolution was to roll back Windows Updates on the server, then everything worked correctly again. Not the best solution right now but at least we can get our critical backups working again.

Unfortunately, maintenance support has run out. Is this a known issue? Anyone else see this?

UPDATE: The cause seems to be Windows Update KB4025335

Hi,

the update KB4025335 is a preview of Monthly Rollup, you should not install it on production servers. It is not for the first time, that MS issued a patch that has some "side effects", there was an issue witn November rollup last year, that contained a bug in .Net framework and it caused some troubles with BE services.  So I would recommend tu uninstall the KB and wait for the final one, hopefully it will not have the same problem.

I am affraid that there is nothing else you can do. As you do not have valid maintenance, Veritas support cannot help you and you are not allowed to install any patches for BE.

Josef,

I thought we'd still be able to detect & install hotfixes for BE (from LiveUpdate) even though we no longer have maintenance support. At least that was how it worked with previous versions.

We've already removed the KB and will wait for a final version like you suggested.

You can still install BE patches and hotfixes (either manually or via Live Update) without ongoing maintenance .

Although be aware:

1) for very old BE versions (those no longer supported) we will eventually withdraw patch availablility

2) after the Veritas - Symantec split we cannot continue to use Live Update (which remains a Symantec product) and as such patching Veritas software will be changing and when this happens we may have to limit patches for any Veritas software that used to use Live Update, where the version in use is not the current version, to manual download only (timings and exact effects of this change are still to be confirmed)

With regards your actual problem, we have seen that at least one of the recent monthly updates replaces the iSCSI driver with something that then has an adverse effect on Backup Exec, however the symptoms we have seen have been instability of the Management Service and not what you describe

https://www.veritas.com/docs/000127259

If however you are using storage on iSCSI it is possible that your experience is related

Hi Colin, thanks for the reply. We don't seem to be having issues with the Management Service at all, but we are using storage on iSCSI and I'm also thinking this is related to the KB4025335 patch iSCSI "fixes".

Only fix right now is not to install the KB.
