Backup Exec 2010 AVVI SQL backup problem

Tobi_Langer

Hi,

I've got a problem with Backup Exec 2010 trial version.
When I backup a virtual machine running SQL 2008 server with the agent for vmware virtual infrastructures
and SQL agent licensed (trial version) every thing goes fine. But when I try to restore for example one SQL database
I must notice that all databases are with a size of 9KB and I am not able to restore a database.

Instead when I make a backup with the normal SQL agent every thing is fine.
I can restore the databases and they also have there normal size.

Any idea whats going wrong there?

Regards, Tobi

May I know where are the backups taken.... Disk or Tape?? If the backups are taken to Tape, please try to duplicate the data to disk and then try the restore of SQL Database and see if it is acting the same way.

Thanks,

Hi

Can you please update the job log for the restore which is failing & also the snap of selection for incremental which shows 9kb

Also please answer the following questions below

1. Version of SQL

2. What type of Disks does the VM Carry, Thick, Thin?

     3. What Type of DataStore for the location of the VMDKs?

4. How is the DataStore connected to the ESX Server?

iSCSI, Fibre, Local?
6. Is the backup going through the VC or ESCX? ESX

7. If a backup is done with the alternative, (CV or ESX) will the restore work?

8    Is it the only SQL server in the Env?

Does a backup / restore work for another SQL ServeR?

Will wait for update

Thank You

Thank you for your reply.
I get no restore job log because already when I want to define my restore job I get the error.
My system is running german language and I try to translate to english (and also give screenshots).
When I have choosed my database to restore (9KB or now 11KB) in the restore job and then try to "Check selection" under "Microsoft SQL-Redirect" I get the error "The restore selections don't include SQL server selections"

1. Version of SQL
-> SQL 2008 R2 Express

2. What type of Disks does the VM Carry, Thick, Thin?
-> Thick

3. What Type of DataStore for the location of the VMDKs?
-> SAN with RAID 10

4. How is the DataStore connected to the ESX Server?
iSCSI, Fibre, Local?
-> Fibre

6. Is the backup going through the VC or ESCX? ESX
-> VC

7. If a backup is done with the alternative, (CV or ESX) will the restore work?
-> no

8. Is it the only SQL server in the Env?
Does a backup / restore work for another SQL ServeR?
-> there are more SQL Servers but not working for any.

Hi

Instead of posting like this please go to job monitor & then open the full backup job & then go to job log & click on expand all & do same for your incremental backup job too & once both the job log are saved please attach them & then post it here

thank you

Sorry, I am still a little bit confused.

I have no explicit full and incremental backup. I only selected the full virtual machine in my backup job over "VMware vCenter- and ESX-Server". Now I try againt to attach the backup log file as a zipped html file or in which format should I attach it?

Thank you very much for your patience.

Tobi

Hi

Thanks for your earlier log & I request you to please do the following on backup server & on virtual SQL server & then run the restore & update me with the logs

  1. On the Media Server click on Start--Run and type Regedit.
  1. Go to HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\VMware Agent.
  1. Set the value for  VMware Agent debug log level  to 1 (unless otherwise specified by Technical Support).
    1. If the key is missing, create a DWord value with a name of: VMware Agent debug log level and then change the value to 1.
  1. Go to HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Logging.
  1. Set the value for CreateDebugLog to 1.

Once the restore of incremental fails please go to C-program file-symantec-backupexec-logs folder on media server & sql server & please update me with beremote & bengine log created

I will wait for the attachement

Thank You

Hi,

thanks again for your reply.
Until my last post I haven't ever tried a restore because of the failure "The restore selections don't include SQL server selections", I got in the definition of the restore job, mentioned in my fourth post.

Trying to do a restore was succesful...
I was confused by the failure message and by the displayed size of the database.

An other problem I can see is, that the restore from B2D only goes with about 6MB/sec to my virtual SQL server on my SAN althought the backup goes with about 3000MB/sec.

Thanks, Tobi
