Backup Exec 2010 R3 Exchange Job Issues

Paul15

Hi

I have recently taken over the role of managing the backups for my company due to the previous tech leaving so please bear with me if I appear a little wet behind the ears.

Ok so heres my info.

We have 2 DL380 G5 servers fully patched and running 2008 R2 (64Bit) and Backup Exec 2010 R3 (fully patched to latest hotfix)

The second server (the one in question) has a fibre connection into our mail Exchange 2003 mail array and has been setup this way for some time.

The problem has seemed to appear over the last 3-4 months.

When the exchange job runs (Approx 420gb) to disk it completes and verifies fine with no errors (GTR Enabled)

I then have a duplicate job which kicks in immediatly afterwards .. here lies the problem.

Over the last 4 months we have found that the job gets up the exact amount backed up (indicating its pretty much done) and then just "hangs" The status does not change from Duplicating .. we then notice that the memory usage slowly increases until it reaches 99%. By this point the server is obviously struggling and connection is a little flakey.

This can result in other jobs that are trying to run to disk failing due to not being able to connect because the server is being maxed.

The server sits in this state for around 3 hours until the memory drops off and the job moves onto the verify stage. This then flies through and completes without execptions

When the problem initiall occured the server was 2003 (32bit) running 12.5 , since then we have totally rebuilt the OS and backup exec.

The job has been recreated yet despite all of this , this behaviour is still occuring.

I have trolled the knowledge bases and found articles which "might" be relevant but ultimatly am hitting a brick wall.

If someone could please give me some guidance or advice to help me get back on my feet that would be much appreciated.

As I said ... I am still wet behind the ears on this so hope that this is some novice error in setting up the jobs etc.

Thanks in advance for any support given

Regards

Paul

Hi

When you duplicate GRT based exchange job from disk to tape do you see it is in updating catalog state when it is stucked for a long while on 99%

Also if you want to analyze this you can go to backupexec tool-support utility-debug monitor & in there check job engine, beserver, device media ,third party debug & capture to file & then run backup job to disk & then to tape  & once the job is done please close the debug monitor ,so that you can understand were the issue could be or if you dont may be you can upload the sgmon log & duplicate job log & post here

(You can find the sgmon log in C-program file-symantec-backupexec-logs folder)

Thank you for this speedy reply.

Unfortunatley no it does not change its status and just hangs in the DUPLICATE state , for 3-4 hours after the byte count is exactly the same as the original to disk job.

During this time the memory increases to 99% , only after this time it then drops and starts to verify.

I will setup the debugging for tonights job and post the results tomorrow.

Thanks again !!!

Hi

The job is still running at the moment

The byte count has been complete for some time and the memory is now being maxed

I have attached PART of the debug log which shows at the point of byte completion the job looks at all 1550 mailboxes before then opening each individual mailbox with the information below

This goes on and on and is still ongoing now , whilst it is doing the the status does not change , I can now assume that once all 1550 mailboxes have been opened it will kick into verify and the job will complete.

As I said before , the to disk and then duplicate to tape jobs run fine with no errors but this memory increase and subsequent 3 hours the job is taking above normal is causing no end of problems.

We have order a few more GB of memory for the server but I assume that it will just eat that too once in.

Any support would be much appreciated

Hi

No this is the only backup that is running on the exchange , no CPS

Hi

If this situation with me I will try to take direct GRT backup to tape & will see if the issue still persist

Thanks
