Backup Exec 2012 Windows Active Directory Recovery 2008

Hello,

I have a colo site that will contain DR equipment. We have an audit process that requires us to POC the site before deployment. I am currently attempting to restore MY Primary Domain Controller by following the instructions listed here.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH83015&actp=search&viewlocale=en_U...

I'm having some issues. After I create the new recovery server with the same hardware specs as my old Primary DC. I run the restore job with the settings detailed in the above post within BUE 2012 the restore job completes succesffuly, then in the instructions it says just reboot the server. I do that and all I get is my same old recovery server with a few new folders added to it. I know I'm missing something in the instructions so my questions are,

On the recovered server do I need to add the Active Directory sites and Services role before I do the BUE restore job?

Why can't the server just restore to the exact state it was in from the backup I have, in my mind it would just reboot and then be my PDC with the new name, and login information and whatever basically a clone of my recovered server?

Should I just do SDR?

Do I have to do SDR to get the results I'm after ie.. just an exact replica of my old Primary Doman Controller?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm just looking to udnerstand what I'm missing.

SDR is quickest way to go for recovery / DR if you trying to recover a entire server.  This is a plus for your AUDIT as well if you need to prove recovery speeds. With SDR there is no need to install a OS ahead of time.  SDR will handle hardware changes as well.

The article link above you pointed out is for prior version of Backup Exec.

In your restore job above you need to make sure you pick the option to Overwrite all the files and the AD option?

These article can work or have basic concepts of what you are trying to do now:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH87904

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH10837

There are some additional post steps you need to perform depending on how and what option you selected in the restore job.

Here is some SDR information. Just review admin guide and SDR best practices.  You will need to create a disk.  Depending on OS and hardware you may need to upgrade to Backup Exec 2014 to support some of them.

Craig_V I have been using the manual and the links out of the link I provided in my original thread. The link you just provided is one of the one's I have been going off of.

steve y So what I need to do then if I'm not using SDR, is after step 11. reboot the recovered server press f8 Select Directory Services Restore Mode and then go to the media server and create a new restore job?

Also under step 15 when it says from the Navaigation bar, click Restore and Select System State, are they referring to the old server or my newly recovered server.

I think I will likely be going the SDR route but I just want to understand the other route for future reference. I just wish it work more like a ghost image or something to that affect rather than all these steps to get AD going again. Probably a dumb statement but I like easy what can I say.

Thanks for your responses.

SDR process is closest to "ghost"  you will get.  Just boot off the SDR disk and select the sets you want to restore and change disk configuration if needed in SDR wizard and that's it.  NO post steps are needed.

Its a point in time restore.

May be this is a very basic question to ask but is the hostname same for both Old Primary DC and the new recovery server. If not then, please make sure that the hostnames are same. Otherwise the system state will not be restored as system state but few folders might be created with the names of different system state components. Thanks!!
