Backup Exec 2012 no longer has 0 hours append

I want to create a media set that has no append, currently the lowest append period is 1 hour which means that it is almost impossible to introduce new tapes to an autoloader whilst jobs may want to append to a tape that is already in there.

Previous version at our site was BE 2010 and we could then put in 0 hours.

Help please

Check out the following:

1. Ideas section to see if this has been added in already, and vote it up!

2. Blogs section - BE 2014 is going into Beta soon, and you should ask the question if this is back as an enhancement.

Thanks!

I don't understand your problem. New tapes would be placed in the scratch media set and these are not appendable

New tapes go to scratch it is true, but when used the lowest append period is 1 hour, so if there are tapes in the autoloader that have been used within the hour then it seems totally random as to which tape is used.  In the past BE (2010) had 0 hours allowed as an append period so we could define which tapes we wanted to use.

Can you explain further how you use the AP to define the tapes that you want to use?

Just for info job that start as an append will will only actually append to a tape tape in the same media set as that defined in the backup job. As such it would not look in the scratch / new media sets first to actually append. Once a job finds that there are no appendable media in the media set defined in the job then depending on which setting you have the job will either fail or switch to looking for an overwritable media. Once it is looking for overwritable it will use the settings based order that is defined in the admin guide choosing a tape from whichever part if the defined order finds an overwritable tape first.

However if you are trying to set 0 hours append on your media set than you might as well just set all of the jobs that use the same media set to start as Overwrite jobs as it will have the same effect. As such you do not need Never append.
