Backup Exec 2012

Portnaki
Level 3

We have been running Backup Exec 2012 for a week now.

We have done some test restores of VMs (VMWARE) and  they complete successfully. However they dont boot. We get "Operating system not found".

It looks like all the data is restored and the VMDK file is the correct size.

I've called Symantec Support, and this seems to always be a waste of time.

Hello Josh,

Are these VM's converted from Physical to virtual ? What is the support case ID ? Is this also happening on newly created VM's ?

Thanks,

Riyaj

Hi Josh,

This may easily happen when the OS is corrupt. Actually you never know your VM/OS/App is corrupt until you try to reboot it or restore from backup. This is called "silent corruption'" since all your systems report successfull backup job. The only way to be 100% sure you can recover is to restore the VM to check the heartbeat, OS and App bootability. This may take pretty much time if you have let's say 10+ VMs to backup daily. Veeam for example has a cool feature of instant (really instant) start of your VM in isolated environment and ensures VM/OS/App integrity in restore scenario. This happens automatically after each VM is backed up. It also works fine with multi-tiered apps (Exchange+DC). You may just sleep well, knowing all your backups are healty.
