Backup Exec 2014 Encrypting duplicated backups to tape

CarlBennitt
Level 2

Hi, we have just started using software encryption at 128 bit AES, we backup to a deduplication disk and the duplicate to tape after the disk backup completes

so encrypting to tape, i have noticed that we use double the amount of tapes when encryption is enabled, prior to enabling encryption on one of our backups

we would backup 5tb to 4 LTO4's but now it's 8 LTO4's for the same 5tb

is this to be expected when encryption is used ?

Thanks

Carl

If you are using compression when writing to take then this is expected. Encrypted data. compresses badly. See my article below https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/compression-short-explanation You should also not turn on encryption on your backup job. Encrypted data dedup badly. See my article below https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/deduplication-simplified-part-1-backup
