Backup Exec 2014 - Stuck on 'Discovering Resources'

Mark_Valpreda

Small Business Server 2011 - fully patched and freshly rebooted
Backup Exec 2014 Small Business Edition - fresh install

Set up a Friday full job and a Monday-Thursday differential jobs to a set of USB drives that are rotated. The Friday full job sits on 'Discovering Resources' for HOURS. I started the job almost 7 hours ago and it has not backed up a single byte. There is no one on the server, no open files, nothing going on. Resource monitor is very quiet.

Thoughts as to what is going on?

Hi,

try running a repair of the Backup Exec Installation through Programs and Features

if it is still an issue run a repair on the Backup Exec Database by going to the Backup Exec Installation directory (C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\ ) and double clicking on BEUtility.  see this link:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH67239

Since you are not on Windows Server 2012, I am not sure that patch will help, but it sure doesn't hurt to try.

Has this worked previously?  Has anything changed?

Is it reproducible?

Have you tried rebooting, or at least restarting the BE services?

Can you examine or post your adamm.log?  It should give some clues about what is happening with device discovery.  What devices do you have attached?

Since you indicated that the devices are USB and swapped out, is it only the USB device for the Friday full job that sits in "Discovering Resources"?

How are the USB drives configured in Backup Exec?

Have you tried pausing, disabling or placing the device offline and then un-pause or placing it back into an enabled or online state? If the USB devices are removed be sure to inventory them when placed back into the server.

Mark Valpreda,

You may want to refer to the following articles for best practice methods for backing up to USB devices with Backup Exec:

Im having exactly the same problem, jobs run indefinately on discovering resources. Ive applied the hotfix and its a mix of different servers (Backupexec server on 2008 r2 and mix of 2012, 2008 r2 hosts). The difference for me is im using a nas based storage device for the backups. Everything was fine pre upgrade to 2014. Very frustrating there isnt any errors showing anywhere
