i have the folowing setup main server is running on windows environment and tape devices are attached to remote linux server. if i am using backup exec does it mean files will have to go over the network to the main backup server then to tape device.

Presumably you are using RMALS on your Linux server.

No.  When you backup the Linux server with the RMALS loaded, the data goes straight to the tape drive.  Likewise, if you are backing up another Linux server to the RMALS server, then the data goes straight to the tape.

BTW, you cannot backup a Windows server to devices connected to a RMALS server.
