Backup Exec Conflicting with ACT7 by Sage

Simplicity
Level 2

Hi,

I am having some major problems with backup exec and ACT7 by sage. Act7 will not open and the following error sign appears: "the database cannot be accessed. In order to access your database, check your network connection and verify that your database server is available. It may be necessary to disable your firewall software on your computer or the server."

All PC's are connect to the server and ACT7 and Backup exec are on the server.

I have checked with our IT support who have said that due to Backup Exec updating itself it somehow will not allow up to open ACT7. They disabled Backup Exec, from services within the server, by doing this we gained access to ACT7. BUT we cannot keep backup exec disabled as this obviously runs the backup.

So I’m in real bother as I don’t know much about IT and our IT support cannot figure a way round it without it costing an arm and a leg.......I was wondering if anyone here can help or if anyone has experienced similar issues?

Your help and comments are greatly appreciated.

That's a first...I've never seen an issue with BE updating itself. All it does is patch the application, and doesn't touch SQL Express/SQL at all.

Check to see if an AV isn't causing any issues, or whether or not ACT7 isn't perhaps clashing with the ports used by BE. Check the TN below for further information:

Thank you.....I will check the TN's accordingly and let you know how I get on!

Previously I used AVG and had no problems, but IT people have implimented ESET NOD32 antivirus since Jan 2012 - could this be the problem?

Im really sorry....im probably being really blonde here, but those links you sent me I had a quick look and they dont really mean much to me :-s How can I check to see that they both aren't clashing with the ports used by BE?

Absolutely...I've seen McAfee block SQL before causing BE to crash; I've seen McAfee block SQL from installing causing an installation of BE to crash...so check it out, and put in exclusions if need-be.

Thanks!

Open up a command prompt and type: netstat > C:\ports.txt

Search through the list and compare to what BE should be using. Anything else is possibly a clash...

I thought it was the ESET antivirus but IT support said no :(

Could you please check this link for me:

http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/25128/~/how-to-add-act!-by-sage-and-the-act...

Are these the correct instructions to put in exclusions within the antivirus?

Thanks
