Backup Exec DAT 72 shows off-line

We have replaced Backup Exec version 10 with Verion 11d. Everythime the backup services are stopped and restarted, there are 2 tape drives (Seagate 1 and Seagate 2) The both appear offline. There is also an error in the Windows 2003 server logs that states: Event ID 58066

The Backup Exec Device and Media Service cannot use this device because it has detected a mismatched tape device serial number.

Please restart all Backup Exec services to fix this problem.

I then follow a procedure that I saw on one of the forums:

Start removable storage service.

Goto Computer Management->removable storage->libraries

Deleted the entries for tape drives.

Restart the removable storage service.

Check that new entries for tape drives came back.

Disable removable storage service.

-Disable library from backupexec and delete it.

-Restart backupexec services

After this the backup sometimes works, but it is intermittent. Other times, after stoping and starting thebackup exec services, BE detects 2 drives again and they both appear offline.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

RSM shouldn't be running as it clashes with BE's handling of the hardware. Stop and disable it, and then do the following:

1. Delete the tape drive from BE and Device Manager, and disconnect the drive from the server.

2. Restart the server and allow to boot into WIndows. Make sure the drive doesn't show, then shut down the server.

3. Connect the drive, start it up and let it complete the initialization. Start up the server and check again.

Also make sure the drive is on the BE 11d HCL (it should be), that you're using the Symantec drivers, and that BE 11d is running the latest patches and DDI package.

Thanks!

I have  followed your recommendations. The problem persists.

Mmm...OK, check the BE 11d HCL below and then make sure that the hardware is supported. If not, you'll need to downgrade/upgrade to a version that does support it, or purchase new hardware...
