These errors happen at randowm times and there seems to be no rhyme to when they might happen. Any suggestions??

What tape drive and/or tape library?
What interface type & HBA?

To eliminate any hardware errors, run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility against the tape library and tape drive. Make sure that you select the write test and that you have stopped all the BE services beforehand.

I have a Dell PowerVault 114T with a SCSI connection. I am unable to download the Symantec Backup Exec Support Tool because it is no longer supported. I have downloaded the SymHelp tool and so far it has not given me much information. I have run Dell's hardware utility and it gives me "green" across the board. According to the compatability list, the tape drive is supported.

The PowerVault 114T is just a rack mount case for multiple drives. Based upon your device name, I am assuming that you have a Certance LTO2 drive, which is a fairly old drive. Make sure you have the latest firmware installed.
As Craig suggested earlier, please follow http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH24414 as that will lead you through a likely solution.

I am having the same issue, Backup Exec 2010 R3, Dell TL2000 with 2 IBM ULT3580-HH5 connected via fiber channel to a Dell R310 server. This just started happening the end of March 2013.
