I am setting up a tial version of Backup exec for evaluation. I ran the preinstallation checks and everything came up clean, after installation everything seemed to be working but as I was cataloging some tapes from a tape drive the BE Job Engine stopped responding. Now the service will not start and I cant get any jobs to run.

This is just a test not a solution. Rename the Backup Exec\Catalogs folder to see if the Services start.
A catalog file could be corrupt.
Note: You wont see restore selections for existing backup jobs or catalog jobs.
Again this is just to confirm if there are corrupt catalog files.

Please try to update the driver of tape driver and tape library to latest version.
