Hello Team,
Need your support on the below scenario: -
Following is the customer server information for which we need a solution: -
· 3 servers running VMware 2.0
· Each server has one virtual machine running PACS (X-Ray application that archives the X-Ray images to the disk-storage)
Virtual Machine information: -
Operating System on VM |
Application on VM |
Internal Storage to VM |
Windows 2003 Server |
MS SQL 2005 |
300 GB |
Windows 2008 Server |
Sybase |
300 GB |
Windows 2008 Server |
- |
300 GB |
· All of the above servers are connected to a centralized storage system with: -
o Total Capacity - 22TB
o Used Capacity - 8TB (PACS X-Rays images)
We need to propose a solution that can backup vmware 2.0 VM servers and storage mentioned above.

All you can do is install Remote Agents inside of Each Virtual Machine (assuming their Operating Systems are supported) and then run remote agent backups and as part of this you might also have to get creative with Sybase as we don't have an agent for that so to back that up with Backup Exec you will probably have to schedule data exports to files and then backup the files.

Vmware 2.0 is not supported by BE. Refer to the below software compatibility list of BE2010 R3.

Colin, I agree with you on this and that is what we though we can do but at the same time, just need some confirmation on vmware 2.0. Is there not any way we can backup the whole VM on the servers?

Vmware didn't come up with a backup solution (e.g. VCB) till ESX 3.x.
Customer needs to upgrade their ESX infrastructure ASAP, or suffer using traditional agent basd backups.

You can backup the whole VM's if you shutdown them down before you backup the entire host. You can try backing the vmdk's while the VM is still active, but you may have problems when you restore the vmdk's

As I was directly asked for a way to backup the whole server - I am just going to confirm pkh's answer i.e shutdown the VMs and back up the files when they are not running (close the VMware console as well as it might lock the files just by being open)
However this will not help you restore one file from inside the VMas you will only be able to restore the complete VM in this scenario.
