Backup Exec on Server 2008 Core

Hi,

Im wondering whether Backupexec (full installation) can be installed on SBS 2008 Server core.

We need to rebuild a server within the next week or so and we where thinking it might be better to use server core as the hardware interface layer and install Virtual machines with backup exec on the Phsical machine to interface with the SCSI card/TAPE.

has anyone tried this and is there a tried and tested method for getting everything together. dont know if the majority of backup execs config can be done by cmd line or what.

ta,

Wally

Hi there,

This is only available as an agent installation...

You can read up on it there.

Do you actually mean that you have the Core Edition of Windows 2008 SBS - as I did not know that combination existed - a Windows 2008 Core server is a limited version of Windows 2008 without a full GUI - and is usually just a file server and can only have the remote agent installed.

Or do you mean you have a standard Edition (which you described as core) of Windows 2008 SBS - and don't want to run the SBS edition of Backup Exec - in which case yes you can do a Full Backup Exec installation - you will then need the Exchange, SQL and possibly Sharepoint licenses as well ad the standard Backup Exec license in order to fully protect the SBS server.

For info you install exactly the same base program code if you install SBS Backup Exec or Full Backup Exec - the serial numbers you enter change what is enabled (and sometimes add a few extra files i.e. the VFF driver needed for Exchange GRT, is part of THE SBS install but only added to a full install if you add an option that needs that driver)

Has any of this helped? If so, can you close off the solution please?
