Backup Exec reporting Agent is not installed when it is.

I am currently trying to setup a backup job to a remote Windows 2003 SP2 server.

I have installed the agent from the Central Admin server, and this reports fine, If I to a retry validation it says it is installed with no updates to apply.

Every time i setup a job, no matter what file, size or media, I get the same error.

SVR03 -- The job failed with the following error: The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.

Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer. If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties, click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource.

I have removed and re-installed the agent, rebooted the server, tried the job direct from the media server.

All updates have been applied to the BKUPservers.

Click an error below to locate it in the job log

Remote Agent not detected on msl-svr03.midland-software.co.uk.

Any ideas?

May be a problem with port 10000.

Make sure that port 10000 is not being used by some other application.

You can use command netstat -an | more from command prompt to check that.

Make sure the remote agent service is running on the remote server and running on Local system account .Try disabling windows firewall and antivirus on the remote server and see if that helps .

Thanks for the replies.

Did a Netstat -ano to see what ports are being used on the server.  10000 is listening but not active

Windows Firewall is disabled,
BackupExec Remote Agent Service is running and Automatic. All other servers backup fine by the media server and CA Server.

Try adding -b to your netstat options so it shows which process has that port open, or verify that the shown process ID is the agent. Maybe it's something other than the BE agent?

Check the services file on your media server and make sure that NDMP is not listed (or if it is listed check the entry and put the same entry on your remote server)

On the media server run a telnet test to the remote server

TELNET REMOTESERVER 10000

If this is working you should see some strange characters on the top line of the screen (use CTRL+] followed by typing quit to exit from telnet)

Stop the BackuP Exec Remote Agent Servcie on the remote server and repeat the TELNET test

and repeat the NETSTAT tests

If something is still on port 10000 then the above tests with the remote agents stopped will show it.

Telnet to the server on port 10000 is fine, connects ok.

Still not detecting the Agent, tried to remove and re-install from base, but same thing.

Any more ideas?

Yes on the remote server .

IPV6 is not enabled, or even added as an option on either LAN NIC.
