The school has had to rebuild the DELL  server. I am trying to reload backup exec 9.1 but do not have serial key as it was pre installed by DELL.

How do I get a serial key for this product?

Thanks
Dave

Hi,

Do you have access to your license agreement #? If so, all you do is call Symantec in your country (check www.symantec.com and change to your location for contact details), and ask for them to email you the license keys.
If not...it's going to be a bit harder, but you can try calling them and asking them anyway. They will probably need to verify a whole bunch of information before handing them out.

Laters!

If it was pre-installed by Dell - you should be able to speak to Dell - possibly with details of your hardware (serial numbers etc) and they may be able to help -  that is assuming you don't have any paperwork that you can speak to Symanetc about.

Last option (or perhaps first option as you don't need to phone anyone) if you have a tape that contains the BESERNUM.XML file backed up from the Media Server before you rebuilt - then restore that file and then import it to your license screen for Backup Exec (you can install BE in trial mode with no license and then inventory and catalog a tape holding the backup to allow you to restore)

Note this file would have been in the WIndows (or WINNT) folder (for BE 9.1) and it is possible that with that version the extension may have not been XML - however the first part of the file name will still be correct and the file itself contains your serial numbers. ( in a notepad readable form if it won't import)

You can install it in evaualtion and proceed with the restore ..You can also try installign the newer version of backup exec as well but avoid installign the more latest version as there might be some issue catalog logging the data .
