Hello,
We are planning to use Symantec Vray Edition to backup a Datecenter compsed of two VMWARE Cluster (C1 and C2)
C1 and C2 are on two separate LAN and SAN
the costumer already have this licences :
2x SYMC BACKUP EXEC 2014 AGENT FOR WINDOWS WIN PER SERVER BNDL STD LIC |
2x SYMC BACKUP EXEC 2014 OPTION VTL UNLIMITED DRIVE WIN PER DEVICE BNDL STD LIC |
20x SYMC BACKUP EXEC 2014 V-RAY EDITION WIN 8 PLUS CORES PER CPU BNDL STD LIC |
on each SAN we have a VTL appliance, my question is :
1) With the licence already in place can we have a 1 Backup Exec Server installed to manage each cluster ?
2) can we use LAN- Free Backup or all backup will be LAN Based ?
3) what we need in order to have a consilidated backup management for C1 and C2 ?
Any advise, documents links will be very appreciated.
Many thanks,
Kamal

Hi Kamal,
1. Yes it can...but you need to purchase the correct number of Vray licenses in order to be compliant, so check with the Symantec licensing team or a reseller to confirm. It is based on a per-socket basis of 2 tiers (1-6, 8 and above if I remember correctly).
2. Without the Enterprise Server Option licensed and using SAN SSO, backups will be LAN-based. The BE media server needs to be attached to the SANs in order to use the VTLs. Read up in the Admin Guide on SAN SSO, and read the TN below:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO24286
3. Using 1 media server will result in consolidated management of the backups...
Thanks!

Just as a FYI you do not need ESO (SAN SSO) to do SAN Transport backups from VMware Datastores
Although you will need it if you want to do VMware SAN Transport backusp to a libarry that is shared between 2 media servers
So the answer to point 2 is not entirely accurate
