Backup: Flat files: Fails: The directory or file was not found, or could not be found

Veritas Support have so far been unable to offer a solution for the following problem:

Windows 10 workstation with Thunderbolt RAID array attached used for video editing.

Backup Exec 20.3 (and now 20.4) consistently has problems backing up the data on the array. The errors it gives are:

"0xe00084f8 - The network connection to the Backup Exec Remote Agent has been lost."
"0xe000fe36 - Corrupt data encountered. See the job log for details."
"The directory or file was not found, or could not be accessed."

None of these make any sense as I can browse the array using the Backup Exec Selection screen in the job definition and via Windows Explorer. The user is woking on this machine all day and has reported no problems with data corruption or connectivity to either the array or the network. There are also no problems on the wider LAN or with the backup server itself. The user also knows to leave the workstation on 24/7. The workstation had Windows 10 reinstalled on the 3rd and a fresh RAWS was pushed out. Robocopy has had no problem copying all 8.7 TB of data from the array to NAS.

The last two test jobs yeilded the following:

Test job started on the 3rd failed after 1h 41m 29s and 201 GB
Test job started on the 4th failed after 22h 40m 44s and 3.04 TB

As exactly the same data set is being backed up and the time until failure is so varied, there cannot be corrupt data. If there was, the job would fail at the same point on each run.

I'm also having exactly the same problem with shared folders on SQL servers.

Have they asked you to try the following:

1. Turn off Advanced Open File Option and run the backup again?

2. Check and see if any AV installed on that workstation isn't causing issues with BE during the backup?

Thanks!

Hi Craig, thanks for your response. In answer to your suggestions:

  1. It has not been suggested to turn off snapshotting altogether. Currently we're using the Microsoft VSS provider for the Windows resource being backed up.
  2. There are exceptions configured in the AV software for the RAWS installation on the remote machine. We have had no problems with AV software causing this kind of problem on any of the other resources.

Are you backing up at share at the share level selection in BE or actual drive paths and folders?

Is theremote agent crashing on the remote server?

Hi Steve,

We're backing up using simple LFS paths. When creating the job and selecting the files to back up, the array is appearing as the E drive on the remote machine, we simply drill down into the file structure and select the folders we want to back up. There doesn't seem to be any other way to do this. We're excluding the couple of Windows shortcuts which are in this drive.

I'm not sure how I would check this, or what would cause the remote agent to crash. Veritas Support have looked at the Event Viewer for certain events and also the Backup Exec Agent Utility and have seemed satisfied by what they've seen. Would you recommend checking something specific here?
