Backup Jobs Failing - Physical Volume Library Drive not available.

RCPAQAP

Hi guys,

For the last couple of weeks, most of our backups have been failing with the error:

'Physical Volume Library Drive not available.'

This is happening for both Backup to Disk and Backup to Tape jobs.

The first error that I saw was (regarding the tape drive):

'The drive hardware is offline.

Please confirm that the drive hardware is powered on and properly cabled.'

There was also an error about low disk space on the Disk Storage (which I cleared up)

There was nothing (that I could see) wrong with the tape drive, but it was set to Offline in Backup Exec.

I changed it back to Online, but that did not seem to fix the issue. The jobs are still failing.

Is there something I can do to troubleshoot what the issue is?

Hello,
To start with it, you could restart all the Backup Exec Services and then check te status of the drives in the Backup Exec console. Bringing the drives online manually usually does not mean that the device is functioning.
Please refer to the steps in the following link to get more details on it: "Physical Volume Library Drive not available" error occurs Or Library goes offline when attempting t...

Check the adamm.log & the event viewer logs as well if there any related errors/warnings.

Also, is BE 2012 completely patched up i.e. with SP4 ?

Thanks for the responses.

I restarted all Backup Exec services yesterday, but all of the jobs overnight still failed.

Looking at the Event Viewer, these are a selection of errors: (There are more, but they are the same as these)

I have also attached the adamm.log file. It went back several years, so I cut out most of it, and left just the stuff from this month.

Thanks,
Anthony

I would start with the tape library vendor diagnostics as you definitly have some sort of issue being reported from the hardware.

SCSI: Sense key MEDIUM_ERROR
SCSI: ASC MEDIA_LOAD_OR_EJECT_FAILED

Hi all,

It turns out that there was bad media in the device.

I took out all tapes and replaced with new ones, and now it seems to be working again.
