Hi Symantec Experts,

I use Symantec Exec 2012 for backup an NetApp FAS250 ( OS version 7.0.6), This OS doesn't support my Fiber Tape so i can't backup the vol by using NDMP, i followed this guide http://www.jonaspalencia.com/2013/04/22/backing-up-netapp-filer-on-backup-exec-2012/ for backup netapp without using NDMP but can't succeed.

Test credentials fails.

You need to either use a software firewall to block the outgoing port 10000 from the media server to the NetApp filer or upgrade to Ontap 8.x.  See this comment

You should add the BESA to the NetApp filler as a local admin with full read/write access to the entire volume

Selection of User Shares option is enabled? Refer to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH189560 to know how to enable the same.

The "System Logon account" which i used to connect to netapp can read and write on vol CIFS and i have already enabled the function Enable Selection of user shares. But the result is fail as you see on my previous Post.

Thank you .

Came across a similar issue. Would you pls test a backup of just 1 single CIFS share to see if its successful or not. (In my case, backup of single shares works fine whereas if multiple shares are selected in the same backup job, it failed with the authentication error)

Secondly, would you pls ensure BE 2012 is updated with the latest SP and if possible, update the version of ONTAP as well.

Hi all,

After installing Symantec Exec 2012 SP4 and block traffic from media server to Netapp 250 port 10000, i run the full backup job and the result is :Screen Shot 2014-04-05 at 7.04.27 PM.pngAnd the detail of Backup log.

Screen Shot 2014-04-05 at 7.06.13 PM.pngMedia server can not find the Remote Agent and can not take a snapshot of shared folder before backup.

I am worry about the data consistency .

Could you please give me some advice to fix it.

Thanks you so much.

There is no way to fix this. This is about a good as you are going to get with a NAS. It is the nature of using a NAS. You might be able to take a snapshot of the NAS if it is connected to the media server using iSCSI You would have to live with the remote agent not found error message

You have to disable the NDMP daemon on the NetApp (so that nothing responds on Port 10000) and depending on the OnTap version you may also have to do a special software firewall rule on the BE server that blocks any outbound request on port 10000 to the IP address of the NetApp (ONLY) - this was because NetApp apparently misunderstood the TCP/IP RFC rules and changed the reponse for non-listening ports for a couple of Ontap versions and this caused issues for multiple products , not just Backup Exec.

Once you have done this you enable the selection of user shares inside the BE console and then add either the IP address (or the DNS name as long as name reslution works) of the NetApp into the Backup and restore section of the BE console as a file server.

I also recomend integrating the NetApp Security with the Active Directory used by the BE server as it makes setting up the credentials simpler.
