Backup exec 10 taking two tapes

The job is only 22gbs of data backing up exchange and some data. No remote servers, it resides on a win sbs 2003 svr sp2. All hotfixes and patches installed for be10. Not sure what to do and need assistance on why it takes two tapes. I also would like to to run a diag test of my tape drive tapes are

First  of all make sure the backup Job is not set o append to media . Check the Job log if the job appended to the tape or it overwrote the tape .

Rahul,

It is set too: Append to media, overwrite if noappendable media is available
eject media after job completes
Full back using archive bit
hardware commpression
no verify after job completes
Set remote agent priority - normal

JUst check if there is any alert to remove media from the drive , as when u have the option to eject the media after job completes there would be an aler to remove the media and untill the alert is responded the backup job will not state completed , make sure u set the alert to automatically respond ,
In the job log check if it appended to the tape , it can be the case the tape as data and the backup job append some data and then ask for the second tape ,
Also check what other things that tape contain .

i cleared all the alerts and set all the tape alerts to respond "yes" auto

so, next question - How much data is aready on the tape?  Another similar job with ~22 GB?  If so I would not be overly surprised that you would need two tapes to backup 44GB of data

2:1 compression is a marketing thing, not an engineering promise.  I normally figure about 1.2-1.3:1 compression until a job has run several times and I can calculate an average for that job

44GB on a 36/72 DAT would be about  1.22:1, so it is a litle on the low side, but within reasonable limits

These are all brand new tapes i don't get it!

I'm still having to do two tapes on a small backup? Need some direction to a fix for this again these are new tapes.

I would suggest to upgrade to version 11d or higher so you can use the Grt technology to backup you IS and so that way you would not need to backup mailboxes and public folder seperately ... Just backig up you 1st storage group will alloe you to restore mailboxes and public folder . Running GRt backup would save your disk space and time for backup

I realize thats a work around and will cost money to implement. Does anyone have any idea as to why with new tapes and a small backup that this backup is taking two tapes.

One more thing which you can try is updating the drivers for the tape drive...

That would opnly help if the compression is poor but it does not seems to be an issue with compression ratios . As the exchange is of 22gb it is backing up it up twice
When you backup your 1st storage group it backup the whole 22gb
and when you backup your mailboxes and public folder it backs up the 22gb again
That might be the reason why it is taking up two tapes

It is evident from your log, that it writes about 17 GB of data to first tape and then writes around 5 Gb to second tape. I am not sure what is the exact size of your tape. It appears to be 36/72 tapes.  But, i can tell you that it is running an append job. So, i am assuming it ran 2 backups on two different days to same tape, and hence it is almost full. So, go ahead and change the job setting to do an overwrite job after moving both the tapes to scratch media and start a new backup job. That ways, you can rest assured that an overwrite job happens. Please note thae moving to scratch media and running an overwrite would delete all the data there on the tape.
