Backup exec Server hangs

Lev_Andelman

Hi all,

I'm installing Backup Exec 10d on a windows 2000 SP 4 server.
For some reason the Backup Exec Server service is hanging in the starting state every time I'm trying to start the service. The rest of the services are starting good except the Job engine (because of the dependency with the backup exec server).

I tried to install the SP 2 for backup exec - wasn't too helpful.
I also tried to start everything with the local system account but the service stuck in a starting mode anyway.

Please advice,

Lev Andelman

After 2 hours of being in "starting" state the service actually become started....
Any ideas/suggestions how to analyze this?

Use BEdiag and BE gather utility to diagnose the problem.

Hello,

-- Do you receive any events in the event logs?

-- Any alerts that you receive in backup exec?

-- Under what account are the services running?

Thank You,

Shweta

--No -event's in the event log.
I'm only getting the "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" message when windows fails to start the process within the expected time ( i think it's 125 seconds)

-- cannot open Backup exec manager until the service is in started state ( which takes approximately 2-3 hours) and once it's started there are no alerts in it.

-- the services are running under Domain Admin account. I tried to use local system account - the result was the same - take 2-3 hours to start.

Please advice,

Lev

1.Do you have any tutorial/docs on how to gather some diagnostics with it?

2. Can i do it while backup exec server is still down?

3. The weirdest thing is that after the service is staring that usually takes 2-3 hours it's working quite good.

Please advice,

Lev

which backup exec service taking too much time to start?

Lev_Andelman

The backup exec server service (beserver.exe)

Did you checked the dependent service for backup exec services? any dependent services failing or responding late start?

Lev_Andelman

Backup Exec Job Engine service can't start as long as the Backup exec server service in starting state.

As for Backup Exec Server service every services he depends on are up.

p.s
All this service-server thing becomes too complicate for reading/writing. :)

Did you checked the RPC service state?

I think as per your previous reply, once the service starts after long time, it works fine right !! Thus i am assuming !

The RPC is "started".
You mentioned previously some Diagnostics utilities can guide me how run them?

Run BEDiag command "bediag servername

For remote server
1. On the Tools menu, click Backup Exec Diagnostics.Backup Exec Diagnostics dialog box
2. Click Select Server and select the remote media server on which you want to run the diagnostic utility.
3. Enter the logon credentials for this remote system.
4. Click Run Diagnostics.

Diagnostic information appears in a .TXT file.

For Begather
1. Backup Exec installation directory double-click BEGather.exe.
2. Select all of the options in the Data to gather field.

Thanks, although i didn't find anything that could help me resolving my issue.

Is there any way to run the Backup Exec Server in a console mode ?
Is there any specific logs that shows what's happening during the backup exec startup - step by step - something like debug mode?

Yes you can debug.

See the technote http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/254212.htm
