Backup exec will only run one job at a time even though TL 4000 has two drives

Thanks for anyone who takes the time to read this.  We have a Dell PowerVault TL4000 tape backup server.  We have backup exec 11d.  In the past, 2 jobs were able to run at once as the TL4000 has two drives.  Now, it will only run one job at a time.  If a second job is submitted to run, it just sits there as "queued."  Under devices you can see that drive 1 is in use but drive 2 just sits there as "ready." Occasionally it will flash back and forth from "ready" to "in use" as though it is trying to work but it doesn't.  Any thoughts?  Perhaps a hardware issue?  The Dell TL 4000 reports no errors and it says the drive is idle with no errors.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,

Backup Exec needs an additional license for every tape drive in a library.
With an autoloader/stand-alone, you wouldn't need a license as there is only 1.
In this case, if you go buy a LEO license (Library Expansion Option) and install it, you will be able to use the second drive.
Having a library with drives, and having to run on 1 kind of defeats the object.

Hi Andrew,

Im not sure if you need or not additional licensing for the second drive, but you can check with Symantec, other backup software needs addicional licensing.
Anyway, with BE you can stop one drive and try the backup to the other. If you can use both drives, one at a time, apparently you do not have hw problems.

Regards,

JM
