Backup failed

 I have BE 12.5 and getting error when we are using backup on Tuseday, Wednesday and Friday.

Data is not backed up from last 2 weeks. and getting meassage: Unknown error.

Tape Drive is working fine.

O/S 2008 Enterprise,

BE 12.5

 

Backup- D:
Storage device "HP 1" reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
V-79-57344-34036 - An unknown error has occurred.

Backup is done when i run it on Disk..

It was very minimal backup only 1.2 GB in compare of my actual backup its only 1%.

 

I create new policy for Tuesday.

Hi,

 

Then I'd really get hold of HP's LTT utility and run the diagnostic tests against the drive. Check if there are any errors, and if need be, upgrade the firmware to rule that out.

Is this failing during normal data backup, or backing up something like Exchange?

It is normal file backup..

About firmware its up to date.

If its tape issue then how is it possible to backup without schedule.

It is happening with only Tuesday backup..

:( What i will say to HP..

My license are expired.. is that can also be issue of this problem..

...if it was something like a license for Exchange, then the answer is yes! But licenses don't expire...so you probably don't have a license on the media server...

Now today i am going to uninstall this application,

is it possible to download BE 2010 on license of BE 12.5.

 

Please confirm ASAP.

You can download the trial for BE 12.5 from the link below. It's a 60-day trial.

If you want to use BE 12.5 instead of BE 2010, you'd need to contact the licensing department at Symantec and ask if it's possible to downgrade your license...

I have BE 12.5 and its license. I want to install BE 2010.

Is it possible.

...sorry Jack, clean forgot.

You can install 2010 R3, but to use it after 60 days, you've got to upgrade your licenses. You'd still need to do this through Symantec licensing, or a reseller.

I have done fresh installation of BE 12.5, Policy and device has been installed.

Now I run Tuesday policy once again.

Hi CraigV,

 

After fresh installation, when i took backup, Once it work perfectly. But at second schedule it failed again in data verification after backup.

Please see the error.

OK, but what about your questions about an "expired" license?

Check the Job Log itself, and go through every selection that is listed...it's going to show you what it failed on. Post those details here...

I go through the error job log, and checked it on symc docs.

Restart all services and take backup again. This time i use small backup which has been done successfully.

I restart tape drive also and change the tape.

Backup is still not done.. failed.. Last tuesday backup run but failed.

Is your server a HP?

 

If so try stopping the HP WMI Storage Providers service and see how your backup goes.

 

We have had issues with HP software on several servers causing backups to fail in the same way.

Now my issue has been resolve...

My steps:-

I reinstall BE application on the server with completly new data base.

I create new policy, with media sets.

I remove all HP application and storage application like LTT.

Clean the tape with clener cartridge.

In meadia set policy please make sure your append and overright protection days. Because i was facing issue with it every tape was showing your media is over right protected. so i set my media set over right for 3 days and append to 3 weeks.

The problem which i face i dont have root cause.

That was the reason why i need to reinstall it.

If you know the root cause please share it, so in future if any one face the same issue they can justify the problem and know the root cause.

If the problem comes back, it is still very possible that it is the drive. These things do need professional cleaning beyond a cleaning tape every few years. I had what sounds like the same exact problem last year, and I had to send it out to be cleaned and serviced.
