To troubleshoot this error please do the following right after a backup completes. The reason that this command must be run shortly after a backup completes is that the writers will try to reset back to a stable state:

1. Open a Command Prompt on the server in question

2. Type "VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS" without the quotes

3. Read through the output and ensure that the writers are all showing a State of " Stable" and that Last Error is showing "No error."

4. If they are not then, reboot the server to try and reset the writers.

5. Once the writers are showing " Stable" use the native Windows backup utility to backup the Windows 2003 Server. After this completes run the VSSADMIN command again and compare to what was listed after the backup with Backup Exec.
