Backup from Hyper-V clusters

Hi everyone,

I've got an advanced question regarding th backup from Hyper-V:
Let's assume the following:
- 4 Hyper-V nodes (HV1, HV2, HV3 and HV4)
- 12 high available virtual machines (VM1, VM2.... VM12)
- The VMs are located on the nodes, so that VM1-3 are hosted on HV1, VM4-6 on HV2, VM7-9 on HV3 an VM10-12 on HV4
- 6 cluster shared volumes (CSV1, CSV2... CSV6)
- VM1-2 have their VHDs on CSV1, VM3-4 have their VHDs on CSV2, VM5-6 on CSV3... VM11-12 on CSV6
- 2 Backup-Servers running Backup Exec (BE1 and BE2)

Scenario 1 (tested):
When we create a backup job on BE1 to backup VM1, the following occurs:
- BE1 asks the HV-Cluster, on which node VM1 is hosted and is redirected to the host (HV1)
- BE requests a snapshot of CSV1 from HV1
- HV1 creates the snapshot and puts CSV1 in redirected access mode
- BE1 mackes the backup
- HV1 destroys the snapshot and CSV1 is put into normal access mode

Scenario 2 (tested):
When we create a backup job on BE1 to backup VM3, the following occurs:
- BE1 asks the HV-Cluster, on which node VM3 is hosted and is redirected to the host (HV1)
- BE requests a snapshot of CSV2 from HV1
- HV1 creates the snapshot and puts CSV1 in redirected access mode
- BE1 mackes the backup
- HV1 destroys the snapshot and CSV1 is put into normal access mode

So the snapshop is taken on HV1, even though we is not the owner of the requested volume

Since Windows is not able to make more than one snapshop at a time, my questions are:
- What will happen, if two jobs, each backing up a different VM, start at the same time from BE1?
- What will happen, if multiple jobs, each backing up a different VM, start at the same time from different backup servers?

All the best, Oliver

You got the Answers just above your question

As windows does not allow Multiple snapshot the job will fail

Backup exec Remote agent Can have Control/data connection one backup server at a Given instance....

once the Media server release and the remote agent is idel it can be used by the other server ( if You alredy started the job wghen the RWAS is being used by other media server . it will fail)
