Backup job taking 12.5 hours to complete...

I am running Windows Small Business Server 2003 with backup exec 10 (rev 5520) for sbs. The Drive is an internal Seagate STT34010A and has been replaced less than a year ago.

I have two backup Jobs that run nightly and seem to keep taking longer and longer to run.

The first job is backing up around 17 GB and for some reason is taking 12.5 hours to complete. In the last two weeks i ran into some problems with failed jobs so i ended up changing some configurations. I reinstalled/repaired backup exec and recreated the jobs. This didint do anything for the problem.

Im getting the feeling that this drive is going bad again, there seem to be some items in event viewer that point in that direction.

It would be a big help if someone had some ideas.

Thanks.

Do you have any mfg diags that you can run against the drive?

If you have the disk space, run a job to disk and see if your time is still excessive. This may help determine if the problem is something other than the tape drive or drive connection.

backup to disk took just over 3.5 hours...

im going to try to get one that will run in windows. Its a dell, im not sure if they have one that will run while the server is still live.

If you are talking about another backup utility, Windows has its own backup under Accessories>System Tools

Just be sure to disable any Veritas services first.

im sorry, i meant a diagnostics utility.

Yes, OpenManage Server Administrator (at least 4.5.0 that I know of) has the ability to test the Dell device under "Storage"

errr, but not sure about non-dell tape drive support.Message was edited by:

new development.

Device Errors... The first job took around 8 hours tonight and failed with:

Job ended: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 4:03:57 AM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe00084c8 - The backup storage device has failed.
Final error category: Backup Device Errors
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

after that, a second job ran without a hitch... strange.

Think a cleaning will help out?

Migfht , but now I'd definitely hunt down some diags and run a couple of passes.

*sigh*

now im running a backup-to-disk again.

its ALSO taking a long time,

4.5 hours for 16 GB so far. it is a total of 23 GB

i dont know what the hell is going on...

----------------------------------------------------------------

im going to do the cleaning tape first - let it run a night.
then dell diagnostics - see what it comes up with.
if nothing - full uninstall/reinstall of backup exec, tape drive and make new backup jobs.

ill let you know my progress.

I updated the tape drive drivers yesterday.

Last nights backups failed within 3 minutes with the following error code.

"There was an error processing the on tape catalogs"

no reason given for it. No problem with disk space.
