Is there antivirus software running on this server? If there is make an exclusion for the BackupExec processes.  Regarding the Error 11,this error points to a hardware issue. Try updated the SCSI drivers and firmware.

The Event ID 11 error is generated by a WD USB Backup Disk, the error disappears from the system logs on the server when I disconnect the drive. Any idea how to fix this? chkdsk finds no errors:

Hi there, thanks for your reply, we have symantec endpoint protection small business installed on the server.

Hi,

Run a backup without that drive connected and see if you still get your VSS errors...backups will fail if writers aren't all stable and running. This is normally fixed by restarting the server.

You might also want to consider upgrading to BE 2010 R3 which is free and you can use the same license keys you currently have. Just grab copies of the Data/Catalogs folders before doing anything, and run LiveUpdate to install BE 2010 R3 SP2 and any subsequent patches. Once done, push-install these to any remote servers you have and try the full backup job again.

Thanks!

The Event ID 11 is a controller issue usually caused by hardware not functioning correctly.  Please checkout the two following links: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH128041 and  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154690/en-us

Also do you have exclusions in place for Symantec Endpoint Protection?

Exclude these paths from the virus scan

C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\beremote.exe
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\beserver.exe
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\bengine.exe
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\benetns.exe
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\pvlsvr.exe
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\BkUpexec.exe

and from the remote server
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\beremote.exe

Thanks Craig for your reply, just discovered something interesting, re-booting the server without USB drives attached clears all VSS Writers errors, had 7 of them before. Also how do I upgrade to the R3 version, after running the life update it picked up 4 hot fixes and an upgrade to BE 2012? thx

Download the ISO here:

http://trialware.norton.com/files/fc/Backup_Exec_2010_13.0.5204_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual_DVD.iso

Either burn to DVD or mount it, and run the install (don't forget to grab copies of the Data/Catalogs folders first!).

Once done, run LiveUpdate etc...it is a straight-forward upgrade.

Thanks!
