Is your Backup Exec fully patched with the latest updates? If not, please run LiveUpdate to make sure SP1a is installed.

If you do not have the bandwidth to run LiveUpdate, alternatively you can download and install the latest Device Drivers Installer:

Backup Exec 2012 revision 1798 Hotfix 189571, Device Driver Installer DDI20120615 (July 10th, 2012) - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH189571

What output device are you using?

What happens when you backup other servers/data onto the devie?  Do you get software compression?
