Backup uses 2 tapes?

I had a backup run and it failed and I looked at the log and it used 2 tapes, but the first tape it used has alot of space left on it but says 'Not appendable (End marker unreadable). What would cause this and how can it be fixed? Thanks

basically, the data that is on the tape is OK, but you need to use it in in Overwrite job before you can append to it again.
