BackupExec 2010 R2 SQL error

fjkayakr12

Running Backup Exec 2010 w/ latest updates on media server and remote agent

64 bit OS and SQL Server:

Windows Server 2008 w/ latest service pack/updates

SQL Server 2008 R2 w/ latest service pack/updates

An error occurs with on Backup Exec, job failed::

The Microsoft SQL Server virtual device interface (VDI) has failed to initialize.

This is often caused by not having a required SQL service pack or hot fix installed.

Running SQLExpress on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 requires service pack 2 plus hot fix V4 or later.

Here is what I did so far:

1. Install latest updates on Backup Exec Media server, Remote Agent,

Windows Server and SQL Server

2. Ensure the Backup Exec user has admin rights on the SQL Server

database I am backing up

3. SQLVDI.dll

a. Verified same file version in the SQL Server Com folder and

Windows\Syswow64 folder

b. registered .dll in both folders

Still getting the error any other ideas to try?

If you are not using BE 2010 R3, I would suggest that you upgrade to that.  You can download BE 2010 R3 from either the fileconnect site or www.backupexec.com.  Your existing licence keys will work.  After installation, run LU a couple of times so that you can get SP1 and the latest hotfixes.  You then push out your remote agents again.

Have you seen this document?

I just thought thought of something regarding the setup.

If the Backup Exec 2010 software is 32 Bit would it have an issue backing up the SQL Server 2008 R2 because it is 64 bit?

No.  There is no such restriction.

Is there something in R3 version that specifically addresses this issue/error?  The link you posted relates to updating SQL Server 2005, I am running 2008 R2 SQL.

Any errros related to VDI in event viewer on the SQL server when the job fails?

Also there is a VDI backup simulator tool available from Microsoft:

http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlbackupsim/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=5648

I am not sure if it works for SQL 2008 R2. You can download and check as this will help isolate if the issue is with VDI itself.

I just checked Event Viewer on the SQL Server, I don't see any VDI errors.

Someone else suggested to upgrade to R3.  Does anyone know if the SQL error is a known issue in 2010 R2 and that R3 will fix this issue?
