BackupExec 2010 R3 SP4 and ESXI 5.1 Incorrect Function

Hi all,

I have an issue since 3 weeks and i can't find any solution.

I have a physical backup server with Windows 2003 R2 / Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP4 and a physical VMware VCenter 5.1 server with 2 x ESX 4.0 + 1 x ESXI 5.1

When i try to browse the VCenter server using Backup Exec i have an error message "Incorrect Function".

If i remove the ESXi 5.1 from Vcenter, everthing is working fine.

If i try to browse the ESXi 5.1 directly from Backup Exec (using ESXi Ip adress) i have the same "Incorrect Function" error message.

I have valid enterprise licenses for Windows, VMware, BackupExec, ... (i'm not using free products)

I've checked credential and access rights and for me everything is OK.

FIXED !!!!!!

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH211797.html

I had a new Virtual Machine (from an OVA file) since last week and there was 50 lines / 2049 characters in annotations field of the VM.

After removing annotations i can browse the ESXi / Vcenter

You should update your TECH211797, it's working for Backup Exec 2010 R3 too.

Enable debugging via this KB article - https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH63926.html

Try to browse the "problematic" ESX host and then attach the debug logs.

I can't complet this process because i have vCenter Server 5.1 (not 5.0), the error message during registration is :

"The vSphere Web Client Administration Tool only supports registration of vCenter Server version 5.0.

For newer versions, the vCenter Server system must be registered with the Lookup Service to allow the vSphere Web Client to discover the system."

What update version are you running for ESX 5.1, as the BE 2010 Software Compatibility List (SCL)  stops at 5.1 Update 1 and I can see that Update 3 is available which could mean you need to use a newer version of Backup Exec (I looked at the 2014 and BE 15 SCLs and could see update 3 listed for instance)

I'm running ESXi 5.1 Update 1 (build 1065491)

Here is a part of the debug log file with modified credentials / domain name for security reason.

- Turn on debug log file

- Restart BackupExec services

- Try to connect to SRVESXI03 : "Incorrect Function" Error message

- Export log using symhelp
