BackupExec 2010 upgrade to 2012 on a new server

Hi,

We're presently running BackupExec 2010 R3.1 on a Windows 2008 R2 physical server. We have to migrate to BE2012 to support vSpehre 5.5. in a near future. We plan to install BE2012 on a Blade server inside our enclosure instead of an outside physical server. We can't virtualize the BE server because we're using a fiber channel tape library (MSL4048).

Does someone knows or can give advices for a such migation? Can I install BE2012 on the new server, import and migrate backups jobs and catalog?

Regards,

Hello,   It's easeir to migrate the same version of BE. I  recommend copying your catalog and data folder and then upgrading your current Backup Exec 2010 to 2012 first afterwards install Backup Exec 2012 on the new server.  use this TechNote http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH67768

Hi,

Your best bet is going to be to upgrade the current server to BE 2012 with the latest service pack, and THEN migrate the instance to a new server.

1 of the links below is going to be relevant to your scenario:

Whatever you do...BEFORE you start the upgrade process on the current server, grab copies of the Data and Catalogs folders to ensure you have a manual roll-back.

Even though both are for BE 2010 the steps should still be relevant.

Thanks!

Hello Mchartier,

I think you might be able to install BUE on a VM, since your connection to the tape library is FC, which basically is a network connection. as long as you can configure an ethernet adapter in the VM on the subnet of the FC network, you will be able to connect...

It's worth a try.

Using a VM as media server and accessing physical devices is not supported.

Actually to problem is not accessing the tape library via a VM because we will install the new server physically and not on VMware. What I'm looking for is the best way to migrate from 2010 R3 to 2012, on a new server, and presreve the catalogs and backups jobs.

Ok I'll take a look at that.

When you mean data, you mean Backup Exec data or production data?

Backup Exec...check in your installation path for the application and you will see those 2 folders. You just need to stop the BE services first before copying them otherwise it will fail.

Thanks!
