BackupExec 2010, using external HDD at different location

Basically, I have 2 buildings with their own server. Each has an external HDD for the backups. If Building A's server goes down, I wan't to take the external to Building B, and vice versa. Is there anything special I have to do in BackupExec to guarantee I can plug the external into the server to restore? I'm pretty new to backups and am curious if I'm missing something. Any help is appreciated!

Hello,

In a general scenario, if you have configured a normal Backup to Disk(B2D) Folder on your external HDD then all you need to do is to plug in the HDD to the other server, create a Backup to Disk Folder pointing towards the same location(Backup Exec on the other location would detect that it previously had a B2D folder created) after which all you need to do is to run an Inventory+Catalog job for Backup Exec to detect the files/folders on it.

Before that, please refer to the following links:

If both servers run jobs then you will have issues with duplicate media names (IMG folders and BKF files) if you do not link the servers with a CASO setup.

No CASO might mean that you have to empty the BackupExec database and the catalogs folder on Server B to access Server A's backup sets if there are media name conflicts

I have Building B plugged into A's server now. Should I be looking at the Hot-swappable device wizard? I just simply want backup exec to recognize the building B external, so I can test a restore on a file.

You need to add it the same way it was added in Building B. Considering that it was configured as a Backup to Disk(B2D) folder all you need to do is to add it the same way, pointing towards the same location and then run an Inventory and Catalog operation.

Did you also check the post written by Colin? Do you have a similar situation?

Thank you for the feedback. My issue is that I inherited this setup, all I truly know how to do is restore a backup, beyond that, setting up a B2D folder and all is new to me.

Am I trying to create a removeable folder? Sorry for the newb questions!

No.  Removable B2D folders are for things like RDX drives.

You might want to read the Admin Guide which is found in the BE installation directory.
