BackupExec 2012 - Not able to backup VM's Error: 0xe000959a

Hi Guys!

Iam having this issue for a time now and it's time to solve it. Has anyone successfully got backups from virtual machines (Vmware Vsphere 5)?

Let me explain a little about my enviroment:

5 Virtual Windows Servers:

1 2008 RTM x64 - MSSQL Server

1 2003 R2 x64 - WSS - Windows Sharepoint

3 2008 R2 x64 - File Server, APP server, Exchange 2007

1 Physical server Vcenter: 2008 R2 x64 - Vcenter and Backup Server

All VM's are on the SAN storage connected via iSCSI and my tape library is directly attached to my physical server.

I installed in all machines the BackupExec Agent (I have Licenses for SQL, Sharepoint, AD, Exchange and Vmware). All servers were automatically added to my Console (Some more than once with different icons).

Ok, now that all agents are installed, and all servers listed, it's time to create a job. What Iam doing (Correct me if iam not right) is selecting the Vcenter server (blue vmware icon) wich shows me all my virtual machines under it (Even selecting GRT, iam not able to see the files now, just the *.vmdk). Then I start a job and it runs for 3 hours at 1.200Mb/sec - The first time I saw this speed I was glad!

After 3 hours (or something like that), BE eject the tape and tells me that my job failed with this error message: 0xe000959a

I google it and tried a few things but none of them seem to work. This error message is also linked with BE 2010 R3, but iam using 2012.

Can anyone helps me?

Best Regards,

Luiz Fernando

Hi guys!

I tried to backup all my VM's without GRT but it fails again, this time with another error mesage (Final error: 0x80004005).

Then I found this article about this error mesage: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH88023

It seems that since I have DELL's EqualLogic PS series storage, I need to set VSS to Hardware instead of automatic or software (I tried software and automatic on other attempts).

I started a job now changing this setting, let's see how it works now.

I'll keep you posted.

Luiz Fernando

...check the Known Issues section and see if this is shown there. If it is, vote the issue up.

I do know that a couple of patches have been released for BE 2012...they've been thrown around the forums over the past week or so. Run LiveUpdate and patch the media server, and then push-install to any remote servers you might have!

There was similar isssue reported in previous version which was fixed. This issue used to occur while backup of Windows 2008 x64 bit VM with GRT enabled.

Please check the job log details to see on which VM the backup failed to isolate the issue. And also try running the same job without GRT. And then please open a case with support to report this issue.

Thanks guys for your replies.

I checked and each time I try to run a backup job it seems to point to a different server. I'll try to disable GRT from all servers to see if at least a complete backup finish without any error message.

Then I'll try to to enable GRT on each server and post these results here.

I had indeed other issues to solve with BE2012 clients on the server, but after that, all backups were just fine (even with GRT enabled).

Thanks for your insights!
