Backupexec 2010 BeVss provider installs inself

Hello Everybody,

We have a strange problem:

In a customers enviroment we experience that 2 VSS providers are installed on the same system.

One agent is pushed by the BE Agent and the other provider (BeVssProvider) installs itself arbitrary

We installed BEX 2011 R2

  • AVVI on the ESX hosts
  • EXCHANGE Agent
  • SQL agents
  • Windows Agents

Sometimes a 2nd provider is installed

  • Backup Exec VSS provider (pushed by agent)
  • BeVssProvider (AOFO (we disabled AOFO)  somehow installed again by itsellf ...

We manually removed the BeVssProvider but the BeVssProvider installs itself on different (random) systems.

When both VssProviders are installed the system crashes or we get unble quiese messages and or other problems.

Production servers are affected...

Does anybody know this problem or has a solution???????

Please HELP

If you need more info, please klet me know!

Kind regards,

Robbert

You will have to remove the vmware vss provider in order to be able to make quiesed snapshots.

Vmware VSS are removed before we installed Backup Exec. That is not our problem.

Thanks for your reply

OK if you mean you see two providers in the services list this should happen inside a Virtual Machine when an AVVI Job is running and then should undo itself when the job finishes.

Default State with no job running for the Backup Exec VSS Services inside a VM is:

"Backup Exec VSS Provider" not running and set to Manual start
"BeVssProvider" not even present in the list

With an AVVI jobs running then it will be:

"Backup Exec VSS Provider" not running and set to Manual start
"BeVssProvider" present, running and set to Manual start

This is all controlled by the pre-freeze-script.bat and post-thaw-script.bat files located in C:\WINDOWS inside the VM.

If you are finding that you see the running state when no AVVI job is running then for some reason the post batch file is not running at the end - so first check would be make sure it is present on the system and then run it manually to reset things back to default.

If the file is present and runnign it manually does nto remove the extra reference, then it could be that it is not the one that should be installed by Backup Exec - in which case easiest fix will probably be copy them from a VM that does not show the same problem.

Finally check that the VMware remove snapshot task is running at the end of the backup job (by monitoring the VMware client console) as it might be that the task that triggers the batch file requests (which is part of the VMWare snapshot process) is not running correctly on the VMWare side.

Also check that no problems on the media server causes a service failure when an active AVVI job is running as if the job doesn't correctly finish then the snapshot will not be undone at the end and the 2nd provider will be left behind.

Hi,

I suggest by Warning: having more than one VSS provider Installed on a guest virtual machine can ucause quiesce and other snapshot errors, for example the virtual machine may time out during a backup job.Verify that your guest virtual machines have only one VSS provider.

Thanks.

One more point

As described by me earlier - The two Providers services called

"Backup Exec VSS Provider" and "BeVssProvider" are expected when BE is running correctly (during a backup)

When warnings are issued about 2 VSS providers this relates to a VMWare VSS provider and a Backup Exec one - and the VMware ones may not be listed as services in the same way that the Backup Exec ones are. Also the VMware LGTO_SYNC driver should be removed from systems as well as the VMware VSS provider as that driver will also cause problems if present with the BE VSS providers
